History

History at Griffydam Primary School At Griffydam, our History curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding of the past—both within Britain and across the wider world. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children develop a strong sense of chronology and build a command of historical skills, processes and concepts.

We believe that History is more than just learning about dates and events; it’s about understanding how the past has shaped the present and continues to influence our future.

Our curriculum is underpinned by key substantive themes: invasion, power, empire, migration and civilisation. These themes repeat across different historical periods and contexts, helping children to make meaningful connections and develop a coherent understanding of history.

Children learn to think like historians by exploring second order concepts such as cause and consequence, change and continuity, and similarity and difference. They also develop an understanding of how we learn about the past through a range of sources, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.

Our aim is to help children appreciate the richness of the past, understand its relevance to the modern world, and become thoughtful, informed citizens.
