Computing

Computing at Griffydam Primary School

Our computing curriculum is fully based on the statutory English National Curriculum for Computing, designed to equip pupils with the essential skills, knowledge, and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

The curriculum is structured around three interconnected strands:

1. Computer Science (CS)

The foundation of computing, where pupils learn how digital systems work and apply this knowledge through programming. Key concepts include:

  • Algorithms – Designing and evaluating step-by-step solutions to problems.
  • Programming – Writing code using sequence, selection, and repetition.
  • Computational Thinking – Breaking problems into smaller parts and using logical reasoning.
  • Data Representation – Understanding how text, images, and sounds are represented digitally.

2. Information Technology (IT)

Using technology purposefully to create, store, retrieve, and analyse digital content. This includes:

  • Creating Media – Combining text, images, sound, and video for specific goals.
  • Data Handling – Collecting and presenting data using tools like spreadsheets.
  • Effective Use of Tools – Applying technology to solve problems efficiently.

3. Digital Literacy (DL)

Helping pupils become confident, safe, and responsible users of technology. This covers:

  • Online Safety – Protecting personal information and knowing how to report concerns.
  • Impact of Technology – Understanding its effect on individuals and society.
  • Responsible Use – Recognising acceptable behaviour and managing online reputation.

Our Aim

We want every child to:

  • Understand the principles of computer science.
  • Analyse problems computationally and write programs.
  • Use technology creatively and responsibly.
  • Stay safe online and develop a positive digital footprint.
